Problem-first guide

How to keep up with professor emails, Canvas notifications, and club group chats

Last updated September 3, 2026

Give each channel one job: email for direct requests, Canvas for course changes, and group chats for plans and informal updates. Review each channel on a schedule, then move anything that needs action into one short list instead of leaving it buried in the original message.

Turn off duplicate alerts and keep direct mentions or messages from professors visible. The goal is a few deliberate reviews with a reliable action list, not a phone that interrupts you for every post.

A practical approach

What to do.

  1. 01

    Set channel rules

Write down what deserves attention in each place. In email, look for messages from professors, teaching assistants, advisers, and financial aid. In Canvas, look for changed due dates, new assignments, grades that require a response, and course announcements. In club chats, prioritize direct mentions, votes, location changes, and tasks you accepted. This short rule set speeds up review, but it can miss an unusual message, so scan sender names and announcement headings before clearing the rest.

  2. 02

    Remove duplicate alerts

Choose one alert path for each event. If Canvas emails every announcement, either keep the email notification and silence the matching app alert or do the reverse. Mute high-volume club chats while leaving direct mentions and calls enabled. Keep urgent campus safety alerts untouched. Fewer duplicates make important notifications easier to notice, though muting a chat means you must honor the scheduled review rather than waiting for the app to pull you back in.

  3. 03

    Run three short reviews

Check once before classes, once in the late afternoon, and once early enough at night to handle a surprise. Open email, Canvas, and the club chats in the same order each time. Search or filter professor email first, scan Canvas announcements and upcoming work, then read pinned or mentioned chat messages before the full conversation. A scheduled sweep takes discipline, but it gives every channel a known next review time and reduces anxious checking between classes.

  4. 04

    Move actions out

Every message that changes your work should become one clear action outside the source channel. Record the deadline, reply owed, meeting place, or name of the person you promised to help. Include a link back to the message when possible. Then archive, mark read, or react to the original so you know it was processed. This extra capture step takes a few seconds, but it keeps an important request from vanishing when a new announcement or burst of chat messages arrives.

The Pally option

The short version: text Pally

Pally can triage connected Gmail and catch you up on connected WhatsApp chats, then put the items worth attention into a text conversation. It can draft replies for your approval and include calendar and email items in a morning brief. Canvas is not listed as a Pally connection, so course updates that exist only there still need a separate review.

It does not cover club chats or messages outside its supported course systems.

Canvas

Canvas fits students whose courses consistently publish announcements, assignments, and due dates there.

It cannot account for club chats or requests that a professor sends only by email.

Superhuman

Superhuman fits students who want an email client with AI triage and drafting.

It handles email rather than Canvas updates or club chats.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Should I turn off all Canvas notifications?+

No. Keep the notification path you reliably read for announcements, due-date changes, and direct course messages. Remove only duplicates and low-value updates.

How do I catch up on a club chat with hundreds of messages?+

Start with pinned messages, direct mentions, polls, and messages from officers. Then search for your name and dates before reading the full thread.

Where should I keep tasks found in messages?+

Use the same list that holds your assignments and personal deadlines. Include the source and a link so you can return to the exact email or chat when you act.
