Location-based reminders on iPhone: what works and what doesn't
Last updated September 3, 2026
Apple Reminders is the simplest reliable choice for an iPhone location reminder. Add a location to a reminder, choose Arriving or Leaving, select the exact address, and adjust the boundary around it; Apple Support says Location Services must be on for these alerts.
Location reminders work best for actions tied to a real place, such as returning an item when you reach a store. They do not replace a deadline alert because no notification can occur if you never visit the chosen location.

A practical approach
What to do.
- 01
Start in Apple Reminders
Create the task in Reminders, open its details, and add a location. Apple Support says you can choose a provided place or use Custom, then select whether the alert should arrive when you enter or leave the area. This built-in route is best for a simple prompt because it keeps the task and notification together. A separate automation offers more actions, but it also adds setup that a grocery or return reminder usually does not need.
- 02
Choose the exact place
Select the specific branch or street address instead of relying on a chain name. Check the map before saving, especially when home, work, and similarly named businesses appear nearby. Use Arriving when the action belongs at the destination and Leaving when the prompt should catch you before you move on. Exact setup takes another moment, but it avoids a correct reminder attached to the wrong store, office, or side of town.
- 03
Adjust the boundary
Use the map control to change the perimeter around the address. Apple Support documents this adjustable area for both Reminders and Shortcuts travel triggers. Choose a boundary that reaches the place where the action is possible, such as the parking lot rather than one point inside a large building. A wider area can alert before you reach the exact door, while a very tight area asks more precision from the phone. Test an important setup on a normal visit before depending on it.
- 04
Check location and notifications
Open Settings, then Privacy & Security, and confirm Location Services is on. Also check Settings, Apps, Reminders for location access and notification settings, which Apple lists as controls for the app. If either permission is off, the reminder cannot reach you as intended. Leaving location access enabled uses more device context than a plain time alert, so use it only for tasks where the place genuinely determines the right moment.
- 05
Use Siri for familiar places
For a fast setup, ask Siri to remind you when you get home or leave work. Apple Support says your home and work addresses need to be in your personal contact card for those requests. Repeat the task and place clearly, then check the saved reminder if the wording matters. Voice entry is quick when your hands are busy, but a vague business name can still select the wrong location, so use Reminders directly for unfamiliar addresses.
- 06
Use Shortcuts for an action
Choose a Shortcuts personal automation when arriving or leaving should run several steps instead of showing one reminder. Apple Support says Arrive and Leave triggers can use a chosen boundary and time range, and some personal automations can run without asking. Shortcuts automations are specific to one device and do not sync to your other devices, even though they are backed up to iCloud. That trade-off makes Shortcuts powerful for a repeatable phone action and less convenient for a reminder you expect everywhere.
The Pally option
The short version: text Pally
Pally can create a place reminder from an iMessage request such as picking up an item at a store or asking a question at the gym. It can clarify the branch when a place name is ambiguous, then send the reminder when you reach the chosen location. You can change the place or wording by replying in the same thread.
Options
Other tools people use
Fair alternatives, including ones that overlap with Pally.
Apple Reminders
Apple Reminders fits anyone who needs a simple notification when arriving at or leaving a saved place.
It is a reminder system, so it will not run a custom chain of phone actions when the location changes.
Siri
Siri fits quick, hands-free creation of location reminders for saved places such as home or work.
The result still depends on Reminders, Location Services, and an address Siri can identify correctly.
Apple Shortcuts
Apple Shortcuts fits arrival or departure triggers that should run an action or use a time range.
Personal automations require more setup and remain specific to the device where you created them.
Questions
Frequently asked questions.
Why did my iPhone location reminder not alert me?+
Check that Location Services is on, Reminders has the needed location access, notifications are allowed, and the saved pin is the correct branch. Widen the boundary and test again if the chosen area was too tight for where you entered.
Should I choose Arriving or Leaving?+
Choose Arriving for something you can do at the destination. Choose Leaving for an item to take with you or a task to finish before you go.
Can Siri set a location-based reminder?+
Yes. Apple Support gives requests such as reminders for getting home or leaving a place, and home or work requests depend on those addresses being saved in your personal contact card.
When should I use Shortcuts instead of Reminders?+
Use Reminders for one alert tied to a place. Use a Shortcuts personal automation when arrival or departure should run an action, use a time range, or coordinate several steps on that iPhone.
