   Choose text or app notification

   Start by naming the delivery channel you actually need. An alert from the ChatGPT app can appear on your lock screen, but it does not arrive in Messages and cannot continue as an SMS or iMessage conversation. App notifications work for personal reminders and recurring briefings if you already use ChatGPT. A phone text is better when you want one familiar thread, need carrier delivery, or plan to reply without opening another app. This distinction prevents a notification feature from being mistaken for texting.

   Try ChatGPT scheduled tasks

   If an app alert works, create a specific scheduled task in ChatGPT and allow notifications on the device where you want to receive it. Include the time zone, recurrence, and useful output in the request. Then close the app and test a low-stakes reminder.    Build SMS only when needed

This route gives control over prompts, storage, and triggers, but you must build authentication, consent, opt-out handling, rate limits, monitoring, and failure recovery. Never paste a private API key into an unknown bridge. Review both providers' data practices before routing personal conversations through the system.

   Use a text-first assistant

   Choose a purpose-built assistant when the message thread itself is the requirement. Check whether it uses iMessage, RCS, SMS, WhatsApp, or Telegram because these labels produce different experiences on each phone. Then verify what sits behind the channel: reminders, memory, connected inboxes, background monitoring, and actions. Some products simply place a chatbot in chat. Others can use connected accounts and complete approved work. Test delivery, replies, and one scheduled alert before depending on it.

   Protect the accounts you connect

   Any workaround can expose messages, contacts, and account data to more companies than the official ChatGPT app alone. Grant the smallest permission needed, keep business and personal numbers separate when appropriate, and avoid tools that ask you to share passwords or verification codes directly. Use provider login pages and revoke access when testing ends. For outgoing messages, require a preview of the recipient and exact words. A convenient text channel should still leave you in control of what gets sent.
