Can ChatGPT text me? What works and what doesn't
Partly: in the US you can text 1-800-ChatGPT (1-800-242-8478) and get answers back by SMS, but the line replies to conversations you start; it does not text you first with reminders or alerts. ChatGPT scheduled tasks and Pulse notify you inside the ChatGPT app, not in Messages. OpenAI's dots, which come with ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium, offer texting only as a limited US beta for some Pro users. Outside the US, ChatGPT is on WhatsApp in the European Economic Area only.

What to do
Choose text or app notification
Decide which delivery you need. A ChatGPT app alert can appear on your lock screen, but it does not arrive in Messages and cannot continue as a text conversation. A real text is better when you want one familiar thread and to reply without opening another app.

In the US, text 1-800-ChatGPT at 1-800-242-8478 for answers by SMS, with no account needed; callers in the US and Canada can phone it. OpenAI calls the line experimental, and it answers only what you send. In the European Economic Area, message the same number on WhatsApp.
Try ChatGPT scheduled tasks
If an app alert works for you, create a scheduled task in ChatGPT with the time zone and recurrence, allow notifications, and test it with a low-stakes reminder. Pulse can also prepare morning cards for eligible users. Both stay inside the ChatGPT app, not your texts.
Build SMS only when needed
A developer can connect the OpenAI API to an SMS provider such as Twilio, which relays texts to the model and back. You control prompts and triggers, but you must build consent, opt-out handling, rate limits, and monitoring. Never paste a private API key into an unknown bridge.
Use a text-first assistant

Safety depends on who operates it, what it stores, and which credentials it requests. Avoid unknown services that ask for passwords, verification codes, or a private API key, and review the provider's privacy and deletion controls.
