Can ChatGPT text me? What works and what doesn't

Last updated September 3, 2026

ChatGPT cannot text your phone through SMS, iMessage, or RCS as of September 3, 2026. It has no phone number you can message, and its WhatsApp service ended in January 2026 outside the European Economic Area. ChatGPT scheduled tasks and Pulse can send notifications through the ChatGPT app, which may cover the need if an app alert is enough.

A real text requires another system. You can build an SMS workflow with the OpenAI API and a messaging provider, or choose an assistant designed to live in a phone message thread. Treat third-party services that ask for account credentials or an API key cautiously.

A practical approach

What to do.

  1. 01

    Choose text or app notification

Start by naming the delivery channel you actually need. An alert from the ChatGPT app can appear on your lock screen, but it does not arrive in Messages and cannot continue as an SMS or iMessage conversation. App notifications work for personal reminders and recurring briefings if you already use ChatGPT. A phone text is better when you want one familiar thread, need carrier delivery, or plan to reply without opening another app. This distinction prevents a notification feature from being mistaken for texting.

  2. 02

    Try ChatGPT scheduled tasks

If an app alert works, create a specific scheduled task in ChatGPT and allow notifications on the device where you want to receive it. Include the time zone, recurrence, and useful output in the request. Then close the app and test a low-stakes reminder. Scheduled tasks cover reminders and recurring briefings, while Pulse can prepare proactive morning cards for eligible users. Both remain ChatGPT experiences, so they do not create a contact or message history in your phone's texting app.

  3. 03

    Build SMS only when needed

A developer can combine the OpenAI API with an SMS provider such as Twilio. The messaging service receives your text, sends the relevant content to a model, and returns the response by SMS. This route gives control over prompts, storage, and triggers, but you must build authentication, consent, opt-out handling, rate limits, monitoring, and failure recovery. Never paste a private API key into an unknown bridge. Review both providers' data practices before routing personal conversations through the system.

  4. 04

    Use a text-first assistant

Choose a purpose-built assistant when the message thread itself is the requirement. Check whether it uses iMessage, RCS, SMS, WhatsApp, or Telegram because these labels produce different experiences on each phone. Then verify what sits behind the channel: reminders, memory, connected inboxes, background monitoring, and actions. Some products simply place a chatbot in chat. Others can use connected accounts and complete approved work. Test delivery, replies, and one scheduled alert before depending on it.

  5. 05

    Protect the accounts you connect

Any workaround can expose messages, contacts, and account data to more companies than the official ChatGPT app alone. Grant the smallest permission needed, keep business and personal numbers separate when appropriate, and avoid tools that ask you to share passwords or verification codes directly. Use provider login pages and revoke access when testing ends. For outgoing messages, require a preview of the recipient and exact words. A convenient text channel should still leave you in control of what gets sent.

The Pally option

The short version: text Pally

Pally is one alternative when you specifically want an assistant in native texts. It works over iMessage on iPhone, iPad, and Mac and over RCS on Android, then can send reminders, daily briefs, and important-message alerts after you begin the conversation. Connected email, calendar, and WhatsApp give those texts useful context, while outside messages and other consequential actions wait for approval.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Does ChatGPT have a phone number I can text?+

No. The current ChatGPT channels are its website and mobile and desktop apps, and there is no SMS, iMessage, or RCS contact.

Can ChatGPT send reminders to my phone?+

Yes, through ChatGPT app notifications when scheduled tasks are available and notifications are enabled. The reminder stays in ChatGPT rather than appearing as a conversation in Messages.

Can I still use ChatGPT on WhatsApp?+

ChatGPT's WhatsApp service ended in January 2026 outside the European Economic Area. Check OpenAI's current regional guidance if you are in the EEA, since availability and transition timing can differ.

Is a third-party ChatGPT texting bridge safe?+

Safety depends on who operates it, what it stores, and which credentials it requests. Avoid unknown services that ask for passwords, verification codes, or a private API key, and review the provider's privacy and deletion controls.
